This was my first trip to Argentina, that although neighbor Brazil, never had the opportunity to visit previously. I knew that there was a Nikkei community, but personally I just knew our beloved sempai Alberto Matsumoto, my colleague in the Nikkei Scholarship Claudia Waka Furugen and the journalist Masako Itoh, who participated as a delegate at the NYN Summit 2010 . On this trip I could finally learn more about the Nikkei community and also the work of the young Nikkei leaders of this country .
On my arrival Masako Itoh kindly picked me at the airport and from there we went straight to my first stop was in the newspaper La Plata Hochi, the only newspaper Nikkei community-oriented and can be read across the country. There I met some of the history of the same, that under the previous name, Argentine Jihou, began to be printed in 1924.
I met with the directors, of Sr. Higa and Mr. Antonio. Domingo Maehara, that told me a little of his work. Also met the young editor Federico Maehama that is responsible for the edition in Spanish. Thank you for receiving and for teaching me about the history of media Nikkei in Argentina.
That same day also went to Centro Nikkei Argentino, an organization of young Nikkei very interesting. Several points caught my attention like the fact that they have a proper place, generate their own resources through courses on Japanese culture and especially the fact that the average age of directors and senior members to be between 20 and 40 years.
I was also very welcome here, with a large number of members attending the meeting. I would like to thank everyone and especially to President Ricardo Hokama for organizing the meeting. I was also happy to review Paty Kurita, who attended the Summit NYN 2010 Tokyo.
On my second day I had lunch with several journalists Nikkei, I was told from another point of view is like to be a Nikkei in Argentina, had people from different background and this has meant that the conversation was really interesting, with each one putting his point of view and showing the diversity even within a single profession. I thank you all for sacrificing a Saturday and participate in this meeting and again at Masako Itoh for organizing the meeting.
My next appointment was a meeting at CEUAN which is a republic Nikkei student in Buenos Aires. Out the problem I had arrived late, was a great meeting to have an overview of the Nikkei community.
What struck me was the diversity of the members of the meeting, had since youth 20 years of age to respectable gentlemen, had students by company directors, were descendants of Japanese, descendant of Italian expert on Japanese culture and also by a Japanese love with Argentina. The conversation was very interesting because of this mixture and it was clear that everyone present wanted to improve something in the community.
I think what best sums up the Nikkei Community in Argentina is the Japanese Garden, fruit of the collective effort of Nikkei Argentinos. It is a beautiful garden, and authentic, maintained for capital. The Nikkei community in Argentina comes down to about 40 thousand, but proved that working together we can achieve great things.
I was very happy to have the opportunity to learn more about the Nikkei community in Argentina. Thanks to all who shared their time with me. I learned a lot and I believe it was a great experience, I made sure again that our goal of creating a global network of young Nikkei is an idea that can work very well.
¡Qué bueno, Igor, que hayas podido conocer algo de nuestro país!
Saludos.
