Mission 26 & 27

• What you will do: Cleaning houses and prefabricated homes, removing dirt, helping out in local events, etc.
• Batch 26: March 9^th – 12^th (Ishinomaki, Tohno or Kesennuma)
• Batch 27: March 15^th – 19^th (Ishinomaki, Tohno or Kesennuma)

Orientation time:

Batch26: March 9th – 11am
Batch27: March 15th – 11am
(volunteers who don’t make it by 11am will not be able to go)

Although we cannot guarantee that you can go to the location that you want, choose where you would like to go on the registration form.

■ Applicability

You must meet the conditions below to be part of this project

• Be physically and mentally healthy to do hard physical work
• Be ate least 20 years old
• Be able to think on the affected people’s viewpoint and act accordingly
• Have a strong consciousness of being a disaster relief volunteer
• Be able to obey the rules of the lodging and the mission
• Be able to bring all the things written below
• Be able to withstand NOT showering for a day or two needed
• Be able to come to the Nippon Foundation Bldg. at 11am on the departure date

■ Things to Bring

・Sleeping bag

・Food for 3 days
(example: instant noodles, snacks, instant curry, coffee cans, etc.)

We recommend the following things to bring as food

Yamazaki Bread Company is donating for mornings and evenings.

1. Cup noodles x 5

2. Calorie Mate x 4

3. Chocolate bar x 4

4. Energy Drink x 4 cans

5. Salty snacks (your body will be needing salt) Ex. Umeboshi

6. Instant coffee and sugar sticks

※There is hot water, but it takes time to boil

※There is tap water but no bottled beverages.

・Sleeping bag

・1 roll of toilet paper（for the toilet and also for runny nose）

・Masks (preferably the three-dimensional type)

・Long waterproof boots

・Rubber and cotton gloves

・Waist porch

・Plastic raincoat

・Working clothes (ex: windbreaker)

・Long sleeve shirts (to prevent scratches, sunburns, bacteria)

・Lantern

・Goggles or sunglasses （if possible）

・Hat or bandana

・Copy of your insurance (hokensho)

・Your Gaikokujin Toroku Card

・Clothing for 3 days (it is cold so try to bring many shirts and underwear.

・Hokkairo (hot bags sold in convenience stores)

・basic medicine kit (cough drops, medicine for your stomach, aspirin, etc.)

・1400yen volunteer insurance fee

・Helmets will be provided

■ Advice from a volunteer:

1. If you take photographs, do not do it as you would normally do, making the peace sign, or smiling too much. This is a disaster area and not a tourist place. Also, your main work is to help clean up the place, so only take photos on break times and not during work.

2. Try to exercise on these few days before going, it is hard work and you could have muscle pains if your body is not used to it. A support belt for your waist is very helpful and could impede you from straining your back.

3. These are all advices for things that you can take, but the most important preparation that you can have is a mental and emotional one. Seeing all the disaster will make you feel impotent at the mass destruction that has happened, but remember that you are part of a big movement of people who will keep on restoring Japan. I am still hurt and moved by all that I saw on the week that I was in Ishinomaki and sometimes have nightmares about it, but it was an experience that made me think more about life and humanity, nature and science, life and death. I hope that you as volunteers support the people of the Tohoku region and at the same time learn from what you see and think deeply about it.

明治大学商学部グローバルビジネスコース、ラテンアメリカ地域市場論で「ラテンアメリカと日本、日係人と今後の可能性」をテーマに講義を行いました。

８月にパンアメリカン日系会議（Convencion Panamericana Nikkei)の参加にあたって、明治大学の中林先生と通して６名の学生と知り合いました。メキシコ、カンクンで行われたこのCOPANIという会議ではNYNの目的やアイディアに賛同していただき彼らのお陰で、今回は明治大学で講義をすることになりました。

講義の中のスライド。「日系」から「日係」へ、血筋の関係だけでなく本当に
日本との繋がりの強い方々のことも加えなければならない。

そして、このラテンアメリカ市場論の講師でもある所康弘先生とも知りあうことが出来ました。メキシコ国立自治大学で客員研究員という経験も積まれ、『チャベス革命入門』など非常に興味深い本を出版されているラテンな心を持つ先生だと感じました。所先生は生徒に本当の、生身のラテンアメリカを見せたい気持ちが強い。彼自身が見てきた、感じてきたことを生徒たちにぶつけている気がした。そんな先生の授業で今後の日本の国際化のキーを握る日系人、日系社会、日係人について話せ事、私達の夢を共有できたことをありがたく思っています。Muchisimas Gracias.

今後の日本の経済を担う、いや、リードするであろう学生たちに、羽ばたく前にお話できたのがとても嬉しいです。

今後の日本の本当の意味での国際化には【日係】がキーワードとなります。

On October 29th, we had our second NYN Summit Japan, an event that was started to make a space in the world to present and explore new ideas of young, multicultural and innovative people who have a strong connection to Japan or Japanese culture.

This year, we focused on 3 things

1. Give our annual report on the activities and achievements of NYN during 2010-11

2. Presenting our plans for 2012: The Hana.bi Project

Hana.bi will be the main project of NYN from next year, where we will create a virtual space for Nikkei voices around the world, video interview, and featured articles to share and communicate multicultural solutions to world problems.

In short: Japan+Me = Wow ideas

3. Jay Horinouchi, a student volunteer leader in Tohoku, presenting the volunteer activities, and the new J Project which will be launched next year to transform the “Support to Tohoku” into “Business and livelihood development to Tohoku”.

and also an extra activity

Jay coordinated a hand-on workshop to make a Tairyobata (大漁旗）which is literally a good luck charm flag which are made for the fishermen to have a good catch. These flags have become symbolic to the fishermen in Tohoku portraying their strength to defy odds and work together to reconstruct their communities. That is why we chose to make a flag together to give as a present to the fihermen’s families who are providing their house for the volunteers when they go to Kesennuma.

We would really like to thank all the attendees who came to the Summit or attended online through our Ustream channel. It was very motivational for us too to have seen many of the volunteers who we met in Ishinomaki and Kesennuma, to be present as well, and to have taken the Tairyobata the next few days to the Kesennuma.

Today we met with Jay Horinouchi, a Nikkei artist from Los Angeles who came to Japan to inspire himself more in Japan for his art, but encountered the 3.11 earthquake like all of us here in Tokyo. Since then, he started going frequently as a Disaster Relief Volunteer to different parts of Northeastern Japan with the GAKUVO project which we are supporting.

On every mission that he went, he felt more strongly that this is was a long fight for Tohoku and that he had the need to keep on helping out.

After a few months, now he has become a coordinator for GAKUVO, coordinating teams of 20 or more Japanese and international volunteers in Kesennuma.

As an artist, he is in search of ways on how to support his now friends and family in Kesennuma, through art as well. That is why we have invited him as one of the speakers of the next NYN Summit Japan 2011 at the ends of this month, to tell us about his experience, search for more international volunteers, and to have a workshop related to the disaster relief projects.

We met today, so I could finally receive a painting that I bought in one of his exhibitions. This is a painting he made with red paint that he found in Iwate, and painted “rubble” or somebody’s treasure on it. I normally don’t buy art, but this time, I could not resist, this painting, along with all the other ones that he exhibited, has a strong message. For me, this symbolizes the pain that the people living in Northeast Japan are experiencing, and also the battle that they have to endure to once again, make this whole area lively and safe.

Thank you Jay, and see you on the next trip to Kesennuma. We have put this painting in the entrance of our office so everyone gets reminded that this disaster is not over until all are back living happily as they were before 3.11

Dear NYN Friends

It is the time of the year when we gather together in person to share our visions and synergize our ideas to make this global network become what we want it to be.

A year and four months have passed since Nikkei Youth Network was founded, and during that time Japan has been hit with 3 disasters: Earthquake, Tsunami and Radiation. This experience has made us think more deeply in what this world needs and what can we do as a global community of people with strong bonds with Japan.

Today we have a better vision on what we want to achieve, but the HOW to achieve it, will become an open discussion on this coming NYN Summit 2011 in Tokyo.

I would like to invite you to be part of our transformation and part of a new project that we will be presenting you on this occasion. We need your help, your ideas to make this work.

このフレーズをモットーに８月１４日横浜赤レンガ倉庫広場で横浜初の大々的なペルーフェスティバルを共同で行いました。日本にはペルー人が５万人以上住んでおり、３月１１日の様々な出来事に彼らも心を打たれています。

日本語もあまり出来なかったり仕事に追われ、日本のために何もできないでいる渦々とした気持ちが耐えない方も多数いるなか、日系ユースネットワーク事務局スタッフのセバヨス・クリスチャンがペルー人による、東北支援のための大々的なチャリティーイベントをやろうではないかと決断しました。その熱い思いに賛同し、日系ユースネットワークは全面的に今回のイベントを協力することにしました。

セバヨスはペルー人パフォーマーの呼び込み、日本のラテンメディアへの告知、ブースのコーディネート、スタッフコーディネート、ウェブサイト等
日系ユースネットワークは赤レンガ倉庫事務局や横浜市役所との様々な許可書の申請、テレビ番組でのPR、募金ブースの管理等を担当しました。

当日の寄付ブースには日本財団学生ボランティアセンターで活躍した留学生５名がサポートをしてくれました

当初このイベントの規模を聞いたときは素直、やれるかどうかの不安がありました。横浜赤レンガ倉庫という大ひろばで５０００人以上の来場者を呼ぶイベントというのはセバヨスも私たちも実行したことなくどこから手をつければ良いのか、手探り状態でした。しかし、日本に住む日系ペルー人の強いサポート、パフォーマーの無償の参加、日本の南米コミュニティーの応援と協力で今回のイベントは成功に終わることが出来ました。

開場には在日外国人用のサービスをメインに扱う企業ブースや各国の南米料理ブースで出来ており、入り口付近には日系ユースネットワークの募金と活動紹介ブースを設置しました。会場費用、音響システムなどのコストはすべてブースの使用料で賄い、募金はすべて日本財団ROAD Projectに寄付します。入場料を取り、それを寄付金にするという案も出ました。しかし、それよりも入場料を開放し善意で寄付する方々を優先しました。

復興に大きく影響するような額にはなりませんでしたが、２５万５千９７円の寄付金が集まり、参加した方々に元気を与え、今後の日本との関わり方、一緒にがんばる精神に火がついたイベントになったと心から感じています。協力を頂いた方々、ボランティアで開場で一日中頑張ってくれた留学生、参加をしていただいたみなさま、心から感謝いたします。

◆Guidelines for applicants

［Conditions to apply］

・Be a student at an educational institution
・Men and women over 20 years with strong physical and mental health
・People willing to help the victims, from the point of view of the victims
・Be able to bring your own sleeping bag, work gear, and food for 4 days
・Be ready to remove the mud and clean various houses and buildings
・Be able to endure hardships such as not sleeping in beds for 4 days, doing hard labor
・Be able to come to the Nippon Foundation Bldg. in Tokyo by your own means
・Pay the volunteer insurance fee of 1,400yen to be paid on the day of departure.

Work Description

Work type differs depending on the needs of the citizens of each location
These are some of the things that you could be doing.
- Removing the mud and clean various houses and buildings.
- Gathering boeys, shells, fishing gear in the bay
- Collecting personal belongings

Things we require you to bring

・Sleeping bag
・Food for 4 days. (example: instant noodles, snacks, instant curry)
・1 roll of toilet paper（for the toilet and runny nose）
・Masks
・Long waterproof boots (if possible, boots with metal soles)
・Rubber and cotton gloves
・Working clothes (example:windbreaker)
・Long sleeve shirts
・Goggles or sunglasses
・Flashlight
・Your insurance card
・Your Gaikokujin Toroku Card
・1400yen Volunteer insurance fee

Working place

- Ishinomaki, Miyagi prefecture
- Kesennuma, Miyagi prefecture
- Tono, Iwate prefecture
- Rikuzentakata, Miyagi prefecture
NOTE: The working place that you will be sent will depend on the demands of the prefectures on that day.

Lodging

The Nippon Foundation Student Volunteer center will provide you with lodging so YOU DON’T NEED A TENT or HELMET
Location: Osatocho B&G Center (Ishinomaki) or Mr.Baba’s house (Kesennuma) or Tono Magokoro Center(Tono)

NOTES on the Osatocho B&G Center
・You can use the shower (with hot water as well)
・ You will be able to use a Sento (public japanese bathing place) for 500yen
・ Hot water is available to make you instant noodles and coffee in the morning
・ There’s a Seven Eleven and a Sunkus near the center (Outings after 9pm is not allowed)
・ There’s a restaurant near the center
・ There’s a vending machine inside the building that you can use as well
・ You will sleep on judo mats on the second floor

NOTES on Mr.Baba’s house
・ You can use the shower/ofuro of a nearby minshuku (for 200 yen)
・ We have portable kettles to boil water to make you instant noodles and coffee in the morning and night
・ There’s a supermarket near the house, but it closes at 18:00. There’re some soda vending machines around as well.
・ You’ll sleep on the second floor. The tatamis are usually used by the girls, the men should take some camping matsif possible.

NOTES on the Tono Magokoro Center
・It’s a prefabricated building
・There’s a supermarket and a convenience store near by (outings after 9pm are not allowed
・If you reserve the day before you can order breakfast for 300yen, and lunch for 200yen, dinner for 500yen
